In Social Studies, we did the Regions Project. We would make a flag that would represent our regions of the United States. We would do this by finding the state mottos of each of the states in our region and then come up with a motto for our overall region. We would then make a flag based off of that motto. The purpose of this assignment was to understand more about the regions of the United States and how they were different from each other. It fits in with the Critical Thinking part of the Westport 2025 Lens because we break down ideas that we learned and connect them to be able to make our flag. My group was studying the southwest region, and we noticed that all the regions had a similar motto to "Grow together". We made a flag with 6 stars representing the states and the plants representing the states' growth. By doing this, we would also understand the significance in concepts, such as the overall themes in the different regions of the United States. This project made us to think hard about what we should do on our flags, which has us make knowledge-based decisions. This project forced us to do heavy thinking and take different ideas to create something new.
